Mannequin Training:
My Favorite Drills
Greetings!
Through the years we have all accumulated our favorite soccer drills and exercises. Drills that are effective, productive and fulfill our coaching expectations. Exercises that we can pull from our mind in a moments notice and run to perfection.
Listed in this issue are a few of my favorite "Training Mannequin" exercises. Drills using The Soccer Wall TM that help me paint a better picture and bring my soccer lesson's to life. Do you have a few? If so I would like to know them and share them through the Newsletter. Please send me an e-mail!

Free Kicks / Long and Wide
At least 3-4 times per game our teams receive Free Kicks from 30-40 yards out and wide. We overload the back side and send the ball over to several onrunning players in hopes of getting in behind the opponents defense for a close range shot on goal.
The timing, angle and speed of your runners is critical. The pace and placement of the service is also critical. Over and over we attempt to get this right only to fall short. The runners are not committed to getting there or the service is not on target or weighted properly. Why can't we execute this more often?
Well, I have good news. The Soccer Wall TM can fix your execution. Use The Soccer Wall to create your opponents last line of defense.
1) Place your free kick artists on the ball. (Place 5-10 balls next to them)
2) Instruct your players to send the ball to the 6 yard box on the far post with pace.
3) Organize your other players into groups of 4. Each Team of 4 players attacks the Free Kick.
4) Have a player or coach watch for off sides and call it!
5)Now, Send ball after ball in. Encourage the runners to get there!
Encourage your free kick artist to hit the target area with pace. The runners must sprint to the target area when the ball is touched! Do not allow them to hesitate and wait to see where the ball is going! They must sprint first and look second.
Spend 15 minutes once per month practicing the execution and watch the the goals come in!
Free Kicks / Direct and Indirect in Scoring Range
Direct Kicks: Once per week, while the rest of the team is cooling down and stretching have your Free Kick Specialists take 10 minutes of Free Kicks:
1) Place 3-4 Soccer Wall training mannequins in the desired free kick spot on the right and left sides of the goal.
2) Place a cone with 5-10 balls behind it at the proper free kick spot. Do the same on the opposite side of the goal.
3) Have the shooters alternate from side to side perfecting their touch, pace and accuracy. Use a GK for a greater challenge!
4) On a weekly basis alternate the distance and angle of your free kicks.
Indirect Free Kicks:
1) Set up your Soccer Wall in the desired position.
2) Walk your players through the choreographed free kick play.
3) Have them try it on their own.
Repeat, Repeat, Repeat. Educate, explain, direct and demonstrate where to run, where to look, how to act in order to deceive the opponent and keep the Goal Keeper off balance.
Now, all you need is to draw the foul! Then, sit back and watch the execution. Your goal scoring %'s will rise! And, the suspense and satisfaction of watching your coaching contributions will brighten your day!

1v1 Training
Players love to dribble...Coaches like to watch them dribble, when they are successful...The first part of dribbling skill is developing and mastering ball control while running. The second part is incorporating some cuts, fakes and feints into the dribble.
The Soccer Wall makes a great passive opponent for dribblers to take on. It allows the dribbler to concentrate on his/her touch, pace, fakes and feints. They must master these skills before they are ready to try them on a live opponent. The Soccer Wall Mannequin also serves as a great player warm up tool even for your expert dribblers to take on.
1) Separate players into groups of 4 or 5.
2) Spilt the 4-5 players and place them 10 yards apart.
3) Place a Soccer Wall Mannequin in between the players.
4) Using 1 ball , have the players dribble at the mannequin.
5) After beating the mannequin dribbler delivers ball to their waiting teammate who then repeats.
6) Add a second ball per group. Now 2 players are attacking the Mannequin.
7) To avoid collisions the rule is: The second player to arrive at the mannequin must react to the first player and make sure he /she cuts the opposite direction.
Do not worry. the kids are surprisingly good at this and will have few collisions. This will also improve their reaction speed while dribbling and force them to get their head up while dribbling.
